Duration: 2 days

Intended Audience: Health care providers in HIV care and treatment settings

Description:

In the two-day training, trainers review basic information about the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs), related syndromes, and their treatment. Providers are trained to routinely assess for symptoms of STI, examine patients for signs of infection, and treat identified syndromes. Providing education for the HIV-infected patient on STI management and managing STI in sex partners are reviewed in detail. Also, managing STI in pregnant women is discussed. Much of the training familiarizes providers with the technical content, and teaches them to apply that knowledge through patient case studies. That allows providers to acquire the skills and the confidence to implement syndromic STI management with HIV-infected patients in their clinics. Additionally, implementation steps for making STI syndromic management a part of routine care in HIV clinical settings are discussed.

This training is divided into six modules:

  • Module 1: Introduction, Purpose, and Overview
  • Module 2: Understanding Causes of STI Syndromes
  • Module 3: Identifying and Treating STIs in HIV-Infected Patients
  • Module 4: Addressing Partner Management
  • Module 5: STIs, Pregnancy, and Infertility
  • Module 6: Integration of STI Management into HIV Care and Treatment Settings
